The New Ghostbusters Movie
A lot of discussion has been had about this movie and most of it tends to hit on the issue of gender in the movie. There are people who call those who speak out against it as sexist while those who speak out against t blame PC, feminism. I find both arguments to be ridiculous and misses something that’s endemic in Hollywood these days: the reboot of older movies. What’s coming out of Hollywood are mostly reboots due to the probability that Hollywood is afraid of investing in original stories. The only reboot that I believe was done excellent are the Star Trek movies. JJ Abrams made that his movie franchise by totally overhauling the timeline in the beginning of the first movie. However, the other reboots have tried to retell the story but tragically failed. I have yet to see the new Ghostbusters reboot and unlike the hate mongers on both sides of the argument (over a damn movie mind you) my gripe is not that the storyline isn’t consistent with the originals (ie: the women being the children of the original Ghostbusters which would’ve really cool) nor is it the fact that it has women taking the roles of what has been male for most of the franchise (which is not a bad thing, women need role models that aren’t anorexic, bimbos who aren’t truly empowered). No, none of that bothers me, it’s the rebooting of a franchise to begin with. It shows a lack of fortitude by Hollywood to take a chance on an original story/movie and it shows that imagination in Hollywood is dwindling to mere regurgitation of old movies.
And for those who are making this political, just stop….it’s a movie. There are bigger problems to deal with such as having two criminals running for President this year.
